Punting on the Cherwell is a pack of 10 folded art greeting cards reproducing an ink sketch by William Rowsell. The artwork depicts people punting on the River Cherwell behind Oxford Botanic Garden. The original sketch was drawn on location with a brush and black ink on white paper.
I was painting with the Oxford plein air painting group in Oxford. I always sketch my locations in black-and-white ink before painting in oils en plein air. This enables me to simplify the scene and break it down into a simpler form. I captured people punting down the river in the dappled shade beneath the trees lining the River Cherwell in the July sunshine, an idyllic scene with the punts reflected in the water.
