This bone china mug shows a reproduction of an ink drawing of Atlas.  As part of the Greek Myth collection this is one of eight exquisite illustrations, meticulously crafted by hand using a dip pen and black Indian ink on board. 

Atlas is a prominent figure in Greek mythology known for his immense strength and his eternal punishment of bearing the heavens on his shoulders. Zeus condemned Atlas to stand at the western edge of the earth and hold up the heavens (the celestial sphere) on his shoulders for eternity.

Inspiration

This design was created as one of a series of eight illustrations based on stories and characters from Greek mythology. They were designed in the round so they could be reproduced on round objects such as plates and a range of other products.  The designs are in pairs:
