The inspiration and making of Bluebell wood

How Bluebell Wood was made

Bluebell wood is an etching.

Creating an etching edition is both an art and a science, with a dash of patience thrown in for good measure. Begin by preparing a metal plate, often copper, and cover it with a waxy ground. Use a pointed tool to draw your design, exposing the metal beneath.

Next, carefully submerge your plate in an acid bath—this etches your design into the metal. Rinse and remove the ground, revealing your masterpiece. Apply ink to the plate, wipe away the excess, and press it onto damp paper using an etching press. Voilà! You've created your first print. Repeat the inking and pressing to produce your full edition.

Consistency is key, but a little imperfection adds character to each print which makes them unique and shows that they are hand made by a human, NOT a machine.
