Painting the bridge at Wotton pleasure gardens

Oil painting of Wotton Gardens by William Rowsell

My favourite view locally to paint is this view across the lake to the ornamental curved bridge in Wotton Pleasure Gardens. I return to it again and again at different times of the year. I have a favourite tree that is very graceful and reminds me the trees that Gainsborough used to paint in his portraits. This particular painting from June 2023 remains in my private collection. I try to allow a lot of playfulness in to my painting process and dont allow tehnical issues get in the way of expression. What is important is what I saw in the lansdscape that prompted me to want to capture it. Im not looking to reproduce what I see but use it as a starting point and allow something surprising to appear. I'm happy to fail and just be out in nature.
